WeChat is a mobile messaging app which was first released in 2011. In its home market of China, WeChat is marketed as Weixin and was rebranded as WeChat in 2012 for international audiences. In the third quarter of 2014, the distribution of WeChat users worldwide was measured by age. During this time, users aged between 25 and 34 years of age, accounted for 40 percent of WeChat users worldwide. In comparison, only two percent of WeChat users were aged between 55 and 64.
The WeChat app enables users to take part in a variety of activities. A survey amongst WeChat users in China in May 2014, resulted in a ranking of the most popular user activities. During the survey, 84.5 percent of respondents states that they had used voice messaging on the app, which made it the most popular user activity. Text messaging was ranked the second most popular with an 83.3 percent share of respondents. Other popular activities according to users in China included the photo sharing feature called Moment, group messaging, searching for people nearby and shopping.
WeChat also includes a following function whereby users can follow accounts. The types of accounts followed by users in China in May 2014 were reported during a survey. Somewhat surprisingly the most popular accounts were not those of celebrities (with a 26.3 percent share of users) or brands (with a 17.7 percent share of users). The types of accounts with the most followers as of May 2014 were news media accounts with a 41.5 percent share of respondents.
